「最高極秘任務 −重巡洋艦 インディアナポリス 1945−」
“The Top-Secret Mission -Heavy Cruiser USS Indianapolis 1945-” 「インディアナポリス」は、アメリカ海軍のポートランド級重巡洋艦の2番艦です。日米戦では、太平洋を文字通り東奔西走して様々な任務に従事しました。その同艦の数ある戦歴の中でも最も注目すべきエピソードは、やはり最後の極秘任務でしょう。
この作品は、アメリカ本土での修理を終えた「インディアナポリス」が、極秘任務を帯びて1945年7月16日にサンフランシスコを発ち、ハワイへ向けて太平洋を航行している様子をイメージして描いたものです。この時艦内には、広島・長崎に投下される事になる原子爆弾部品と核材料が最高機密貨物として積み込まれていました。艦は7月19日に真珠湾へ寄港し、7月26日には最終目的地テニアン島へ到着しました。その後、グアム寄港を経てレイテ島を目指し単艦で航行していたところ、潜水艦伊58（回天特別攻撃隊多聞隊として行動中）の雷撃を受けて撃沈されました。
The Indianapolis was the second of the U.S. Navy's Portland class heavy cruisers. During the Pacific War, she literally ran east and west across the Pacific Ocean, performing a variety of missions. Among her many war stories, the most notable episode is still her last top-secret mission.
This work depicts the Indianapolis leaving San Francisco on July 16, 1945, on a top-secret mission and sailing in the Pacific Ocean toward Hawaii. She was loaded with top secret cargo of atomic bomb parts and nuclear materials that would later be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. She called at Pearl Harbor on July 19 and arrived at her final destination, Tinian Island, on July 26. After that, she made a port call at Guam and was sailing alone to Leyte when she was torpedoed and sunk by the submarine I-58 of the Imperial Japanese Navy (acting as the Kaiten Special Attack Force Tamon-tai).
