“Aircraft Carrier Shoho 2602 -Nakayama Mitsuo Launches His Plane-”

　航空母艦「祥鳳」は、当初給油艦として計画され、後に潜水母艦として竣工した「剣埼」の後身です。戦時には空母として改造できるように、あらかじめ設計されていました。「祥鳳」は、昭和17年1月に、1年の改造期間を経て空母に改造されました。同艦の初陣は、世界初の空母隊空母の戦いとなった珊瑚海海戦でした。昭和17年5月7日に始まったこの海戦の初日、「祥鳳」はアメリカ空母「ヨークタウン」と「レキシントン」の艦載機の集中攻撃を受けて沈没しました。「祥鳳」の喪失が、帝国海軍初の空母喪失となったのです。
　本作品は、珊瑚海海戦時に「祥鳳」に戦闘機搭乗員として乗り組んでおられた中山光雄氏（令和2年逝去）と交流の深い方よりご依頼を受けて制作したものです。『航走する「祥鳳」から発艦する中山光雄氏操縦の九六式艦上戦闘機（珊瑚海海戦時に搭乗）を盛り込んだ構図で描いて欲しい』というご要望に応えるべく、試行錯誤を重ねながら制作しました。コックピットに見えるパイロット（中山光雄氏）が、カメラ目線である事にもご注目下さい。ちなみに背景の随伴艦は、重巡洋艦「青葉」をイメージして描いています。



The aircraft carrier Shoho was the successor to the Tsurugizaki, which was originally planned as an oiler and later completed as a submarine tender. She was pre-designed to be able to be converted into an aircraft carrier in time of war. The Shoho was converted to an aircraft carrier in January 1942 after a one-year conversion period. Her first battle was the Battle of the Coral Sea, the world's first carrier-carrier battle. On the first day of this battle, which began on May 7, 1942, Shoho sank under intensive attack by the US aircraft carriers Yorktown and Lexington. The loss of the Shoho was the Imperial Japanese Navy's first loss of an aircraft carrier.
This work was drawn in response to a request from a person who had a close relationship with Mr. Mitsuo Nakayama (passed away in 2020), who was a fighter pilot aboard the Shoho during the Battle of the Coral Sea.
In this work, Nakayam Mitsuo, member of the ship’s air group, is launching his fighter during the battle of the Coral Sea, he requested this work. Based on the request of "To draw a composition in which a Type 96 fighter piloted by Mitsuo Nakayama (on board during the Battle of the Coral Sea) departs from the Shoho while the ship is underway", I drew this work through a process of trial and error. The ship in the background is the heavy cruiser Aoba.
