　「リシュリュー」は、フランス海軍が建造したリシュリュー級戦艦の1番艦です。建造には当時の最先端技術が盛り込まれ、その主砲こそ38cm砲であったものの、同時代の40.6cm砲戦艦と比肩しうる実力を持つ強力な戦艦でした。第二次世界大戦中、ドイツ軍がフランスに侵攻したため、艤装途中の「リシュリュー」は、1940年6月19日にブレストからダカールへ向けて脱出。後にヴィシー政権が樹立された事により、フランス艦隊が枢軸側へ掌握される可能性が高まりました。それを危惧したイギリス海軍は、フランス艦隊の停泊するメルセルケビールとダカールを攻撃。ダカールに停泊していた「リシュリュー」も、イギリス艦隊の攻撃を被り大きく損傷しました。1942年11月、アフリカのフランス陸海軍が連合国側に参入し、「リシュリュー」はアメリカに回航され、修理と対空兵装の充実化が図られました。改装後はイギリス本国艦隊に編入され、対日戦に参加する事になりました。
　作品は、就役後まもない戦艦「リシュリュー」を描いたものです。明灰白色の艦が波を切り裂き、深い色合いの海を越えていく姿は非常に美しいものです。1940年当時の「リシュリュー」は、対空兵装が少なく比較的すっきりした印象ですが、アメリカ回航後はひしめくように設置された対空機銃群と凝った迷彩が特徴的な艦へと様変わりします。

The battleship Richelieu was the lead ship of the Richelieu class in the French Navy. Although her main gun was a 38cm gun, she was a powerful battleship that could compete with the 40.6cm gun battleships of the same era. During World War II, the Richelieu, in the process of being outfitted, escaped from Brest to Dakar on June 19, 1940, as the Germans invaded France. The later establishment of the Vichy regime increased the possibility that the French fleet would be seized by the Axis powers. Fearing this, the Royal Navy attacked Mers-el-Kébir and Dakar, where the French fleet was anchored. The Richelieu, anchored in Dakar, was also severely damaged when attacked by the British fleet. In November 1942, the French Army and Navy in Africa joined the Allied side, and the Richelieu was repaired and upgraded with anti-aircraft armament in the United States. After refit, she was incorporated into the British fleet and took part in the war against Japan.
This work shows the Richelieu just after commissioning. She is painted light gray, cutting through the waves, she is very beautiful seen against the dark sea. In 1940, the Richelieu had a relatively clean look with little anti-aircraft armament, but after undergoing refit work in the United States, she was transformed into a battleship characterized by a cluster of anti-aircraft machine guns and elaborate camouflage.
