「金剛」は、大日本帝国海軍がイギリスへ発注した初の超ド級巡洋戦艦であり、最後の海外製主力艦です。2度にわたる近代化改装を経て、強靭な装甲と最高速力30ノット以上を誇る高速戦艦になりました。大東亜戦争では、最古参戦艦にもかかわらず活躍しました。開戦時には南方攻略部隊の支援任務に就き、ガダルカナル攻防戦では日本戦艦で初めてヘンダーソン飛行場を砲撃し、レイテ沖海戦ではサマール島沖で遭遇したアメリカ護衛空母部隊への砲撃に最も貢献したと言われています。その後、台湾沖でアメリカ潜水艦の雷撃を受け、最期を迎えました。
　
本作品は、捷一号作戦中の昭和19（1944）年10月24日、波濤を切り裂いてシブヤン海を進む「金剛」をイメージして描いたものです。その2㎞後方には戦艦「榛名」、左舷2㎞後方には重巡洋艦「利根」、3.5㎞後方には駆逐艦「磯風」が、「金剛」を中心にした輪形陣を作り航行します。終戦70周年にあたる平成27（2015）年、この作品を金剛の艦内神社分霊元である建水分神社に奉納しました。

Kongo was the first Super Dreadnought type battlecruiser ordered by the Japanese Imperial Navy from Great Britain, and the last to be ordered overseas. Twice modified, with strengthened armor and speed increased to over 30 knots, she was the pride of the fleet. In the Greater East Asian War (the Pacific War), she was the oldest battleship in the fleet. Playing a support role in the strike south, she was the first Japanese battleship to bombard Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. She was present at the Battle of Leyte Gulf and it is said that she did the most damage to the American escort carriers off Samar Island. Afterwards, she was torpedoed by an American submarine off Taiwan, and sank.

This work portrays the Kongo participating in Operation Sho-Ichigo on October 24, Showa 19 (1944), crashing through the waves of the Sibuyan Sea. About 2 kilometers aft is the battleship Haruna, 2 kilometers to port is the cruiser Tone, 3.5 kilometers astern is the destroyer Isokaze, all forming a protective ring around the Kongo. Seventy years after the war, in Heisei 27 (2015), this work was dedicated to Takemikumari Shrine, which had shared its patron deity with the shrine onboard the battleship Kongo..
