　一等巡洋艦「春日」は、もともとはアルゼンチンがイタリアのアンサルド社に発注した、ジュゼッペ・ガリバルディ級装甲巡洋艦「リヴァダヴィア」でした。しかし建造契約はキャンセルとなり、当時関係が悪化していた日露両国は、完成間近だった「リヴァダヴィア」と「モレノ（後の「日進」）」を手に入れようと画策し合いました。結果、破格の金額を入札した日本がこの有力な2隻を手に入れ、「春日」と「日進」と命名し、苦難の末に日本への回航を果たしたのです。日露戦争では、「春日」と「日進」は黄海海戦・日本海海戦にも参加しており、特に日本海海戦では、旅順で戦没した「八島」と「初瀬」の戦力を補うため、第一艦隊第一戦隊に編入され戦いました。
　作品は、明治38年5月27日の歴史的大勝利のきっかけとして有名な、敵前大回頭の最中にある「春日」をイメージして描いたもの。同艦は、先行艦に続きターンをしつつ、バルチック艦隊へ向けて発砲しようとしているところです。後方には姉妹艦の「日進」が続き、更にその後方には、上村彦之丞中将率いる第二艦隊第二戦隊が、ターンに続いています。

The armored cruiser Kasuga was originally the Rivadavia, a Giuseppe Garibaldi class armored cruiser ordered by Argentina from Ansaldo of Italy. However, the construction contract was cancelled, and both Japan and Russia, whose relations were worsening at the time, schemed to acquire the soon-to-be-completed Rivadavia and Moreno (later known as Nisshin). As a result, Japan, which bid an unbelievable amount of money, acquired these two powerful ships, named them "Kasuga" and "Nisshin", and after much hardship, they made the voyage to Japan. In the Russo-Japanese War, they participated in the Battle of the Yellow Sea and the Battle of Tsushima. Particularly in the Battle of Tsushima, they took the place in the battle line of the Yashima and Hatsuse who were lost off Lushun, as part of the First Fleet.
This drawing shows her on May 27, 1905. This work depicts the Kasuga in the midst of the famous Togo Turn, which triggered the historic victory on May 27, 1905. She is about to fire on the Baltic Fleet while turning after the preceding ship. The Nisshin is following immediately astern. Next is the Second Squadron of the Second Fleet under the command of Vice Admiral Kamimura Hikonojo, also coming into the turn.
