　「おうみ」（JS Omi, AOE-426）は、ましゅう型補給艦の2番艦です。艦名は、琵琶湖の古名、万葉集に記された「淡海（おうみ：淡水の海）」に由来します。平成17年3月3日に就役し、護衛艦隊第1海上補給隊に編入され、佐世保に配備されました。ましゅう型は平成12、13年度計画により1隻ずつ建造された、海上自衛隊最大の補給艦です。護衛艦の大型化、長期行動化、ガスタービン化等によって、大幅な補給能力の向上を求められ、また米海軍との相互運用性や内外の大規模災害派遣等を考慮した結果、基準排水量において先代のとわだ型より5000トン強増加しました。艦首から艦体中央にかけて、顕著なナックルラインを設け、これによって艦内容積の増加を図っています。その一方、上部構造物を傾斜平面で構成し、マストを塔型にする等、ステルス性にも配慮した設計が採用されています。
　作品は、「おうみ」と「あしがら」の洋上補給の光景を描いたものです。「おうみ」から延ばされた蛇管が、「あしがら」に接続される直前のタイミングです。制作に際して、マストに掲げる形象物や信号旗の掲げ方等について、同艦の元航海長の方から詳細なアドバイス頂きながら仕上げました。タイトルの「Ocean Grebe」は、同艦のニックネームです。

JS Omi (AOE-426) is the second of the Mashu class fast combat support ships. Her name is derived from the ancient name of Lake Biwa, "淡海 (freshwater sea)" mentioned in the Manyoshu. She was commissioned on March 3, 2005, incorporated into the 1st Replenishment at Sea Squadron of the Fleet Escort Force, and deployed to Sasebo. The Mashu class is the largest replenishment ship of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, built under the FY 2000 and 2001 programs. The Mashu class has been increased in standard displacement by more than 5,000 tons compared to her predecessor, the Towada class, in response to the need to significantly improve replenishment capabilities due to the larger size of destroyers, longer operational periods, and the use of gas turbines, as well as in consideration of interoperability with the US Navy and large-scale disaster relief efforts both in Japan and overseas. A pronounced knuckle line runs from the bow to the center of the hull, thereby increasing the volume of the ship. At the same time, stealth features such as sloping surfaces for the superstructure and tower-shaped masts are employed in the design.
This work depicts the scene of the ocean replenishment of the Omi and the Ashigara. The timing is just before the snake pipe extended from the Omi is connected to the Ashigara. I received detailed advice from the former captain of the Omi on how to display figurative objects on the mast and how to display signal flags. The title "Ocean Grebe" is the nickname of the ship.
