　「くらま」（JS Kurama, DDH-144）は、帝国海軍の初代「鞍馬」（巡洋戦艦）に続き、日本艦としては2代目となる、しらね型護衛艦の2番艦です。昭和51年度計画5200トン型ヘリコプター搭載護衛艦2404号艦として、石川島播磨重工業東京第1工場で昭和53年2月17日に起工され、昭和56年3月27日に就役し、同日付で第2護衛隊群隷下に新編された第52護衛隊に、護衛艦「はるな」と共に編入され、佐世保に配備されました。平成29年3月22日、いずも型護衛艦2番艦「かが」の就役に伴い、多くのファンに惜しまれつつ除籍されました。36年の艦歴において自衛隊観艦式では、観閲艦を4回務め、総航海時間は78,772時間、総着艦回数は51,300回、地球約43.6周分にあたる942,760.2海里（1,745,991.9 km）を航海しました。
　作品は、「くらま」が日本近海において哨戒任務に就いている様子を描いたものです。同艦の舷側に走るナックルラインと、波を切り裂く鋭い艦首は、あたかも鍛え上げられた日本刀のようです。すでに退役した艦ですが、主砲を背負い式で装備した姿はいかにも戦闘艦を思わせ、今なお、色あせない魅力に溢れています。タイトルの「Strong Knight」は、同艦のニックネームです。

JS Kurama (DDH-144) is the second of the Shirane class destroyers, the second generation of Japanese ships following the first "Kurama" (battle cruiser) of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Kurama was laid down on 17 February 1978 and launched on 20 September 1979 by IHI Corporation Tokyo Shipyard. She was commissioned on 27 March 1981, into the 2nd Escort Flotilla (Sasebo) together with JDS Haruna. On March 22, 2017, with the commissioning of the second Izumo class helicopter destroyer JS Kaga, she was regrettably decommissioned from service by many fans. In the SDF observing ceremony for 36 years, she served as an observing ship four times, with a total voyage time of 78,772 hours, a total number of landings of 51,300 times, and sailed 942,760.2 nautical miles (1,745,991.9 km), which is equivalent to about 43.6 laps of the earth.
This work depicts Kurama on patrol in the waters around Japan. The knuckle lines on the hull's side and the sharp bow that slices through the waves look like a well-forged Japanese sword. Although the ship has already been decommissioned, her appearance with two main guns mounted in tiers is reminiscent of a combat vessel, and it is still full of charm that has not faded away. The title "Strong Knight" is her nickname.
