“Cool Legend -Destroyer JS Fuyuzuki-”

　「ふゆづき」（JS Fuyuzuki, DD-118）は、あきづき型護衛艦の4番艦です。艦名は「冬空に高く輝く、凛冽とした冬の夜を照らす月」に由来します。この名を受け継ぐ日本の艦艇は、帝国海軍の秋月型駆逐艦「冬月」に続き、日本の艦艇としては同艦が2代目です。平成26年3月13日に就役し、第3護衛隊群第7護衛隊に編入され、舞鶴に配備されました。あきづき型はFCS-3A多機能レーダーと長射程の発展型シースパロー艦対空ミサイル（ESSM）の組み合わせによる、僚艦防空（Local Area Defence）能力を有しています。「ふゆづき」の就役により、BMD任務に就くこんごう型護衛艦4隻それぞれに、あきづき型が1隻ずつ僚艦防空艦として随伴できる体制が整いました。
　作品は、上陸支援任務に就いている「ふゆづき」が、地上の攻撃目標に対し、62口径5インチ単装砲を放った瞬間を描きました。背景には、同じ舞鶴を母港とする「ひゅうが」が航行中で、その飛行甲板には、まさにオスプレイが着艦しつつあります。タイトルの「Cool Legend」は、同艦のニックネームです。



JS Fuyuzuki (DD-118) is the fourth ship of the Akizuki class destroyers. The ship's name is derived from "the moon shining high in the winter sky, illuminating the limpid winter night". She is the second Japanese naval vessel to carry this name, following the Imperial Japanese Navy's Akizuki class destroyer Fuyuzuki. It was commissioned on March 13, 2014 and incorporated into the 7th Escort Division of the 3rd Escort Flotilla and deployed to Maizuru. The Akizuki class has a Local Area Defense (LAD) capability, combining the FCS-3A multifunction radar with a long-range advanced Sea Sparrow ship-to-air missile (ESSM). With the commissioning of the Fuyuzuki, a system has been established whereby one Akizuki class destroyer can accompany each of the four Kongo class destroyers assigned to BMD missions as a companion air defense ship.
This work depicts the moment when the Fuyuzuki, on a landing support mission, fired her 62-caliber 5-inch single-barrel gun at attack targets on the ground. In the background, the Hyuga, which also has Maizuru as her home port, is underway, and an Osprey is about to land on her flight deck. The title "Cool Legend" is the nickname of the Fuyuzuki.
