“Archer of the Flaming Bullets -Wild Boar- Guided Missile Destroyer JS Atago”

　「あたご」は、こんごう型に続いてイージス艦に分類される、あたご型護衛艦の1番艦です。艦名は、京都府の愛宕山に由来し、日露戦争で活躍した砲艦「愛宕」、天城型巡洋戦艦「愛宕」、高雄型重巡洋艦「愛宕」に続き、日本の艦艇としては4代目にあたります。平成19年3月15日に就役し、第3護衛隊群第63護衛隊に編入され、舞鶴に配備。その後、護衛隊改編に伴い第3護衛隊群第3護衛隊に編入されました。平成22年には、RIMPAC2010の参加に先立ち、カナダ海軍創立100周年記念国際観艦式にも参加しました。同艦にBMD(弾道ミサイル防衛)能力が付与されたのは平成28年の事で、その2年後にハワイ諸島カウアイ島から発射された模擬弾道ミサイル標的に対して、SM3ブロック1Bミサイルを発射し、大気圏外での迎撃に成功し、その能力の有効性が確認されました。
　作品は、実戦で迫りくる敵機を迎撃するため、前部・後部のVLSからSM2を4発連続発射している「あたご」を描いたものです。平成27年に行われた海上自衛隊観艦式の際に、「あたご」の乗組員の方からアドバイスを頂けたので、それに基づいて制作しました。タイトルの「Wild Boar」は、同艦のニックネームです。



The Atago is the first of the Atago class destroyers, classified as an Aegis warship after the Kongo class. The ship's name is derived from Mt. Atago in Kyoto Prefecture. She is the fourth generation of Japanese naval vessels, following the gunboat Atago, which served in the Russo-Japanese War, the Amagi class battle cruiser Atago, and the Takao class heavy cruiser Atago. Commissioned on March 15, 2007, she was transferred to the 63rd Escort Division of the 3rd Escort Flotilla and deployed to Maizuru. In 2010, prior to her participation in RIMPAC 2010, she also participated in an international naval review ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Canadian Navy. She was given a BMD (Ballistic Missile Defense) capability in 2016, and two years later, she launched an SM3 Block 1B missile against a simulated ballistic missile target launched from Kauai, Hawaiian Islands, and successfully intercepted it outside the atmosphere, confirming the effectiveness of the capability.
This work depicts the Atago firing four consecutive SM2s from the fore and aft VLSs to intercept oncoming enemy aircraft in actual combat. I received advice from the crew of the Atago during the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Naval Review in 2015, and based on this advice, I drew this work. The title "Wild Boar" is the nickname of the ship.
