「Tow the Resolution! −戦艦 バーラム 1940−」
“Tow the Resolution! -Battleship HMS Barham 1940-” 「バーラム」は、イギリス海軍のクイーン・エリザベス級戦艦の3番艦です。就役後まもなく参加した第一次世界大戦後に近代化改装が行われ、防御力の強化が図られました。第二次世界大戦の勃発後は、大西洋及び地中海で行動。1940年9月、ダカール攻撃（メネス作戦）に参加し、ヴィシー・フランス海軍の艦艇と交戦しました。
作品は、メネス作戦中の「バーラム」を描いたものです。1940年9月25日、ダカール沖でフランス潜水艦の雷撃により航行不能となった戦艦「レゾリューション」を曳航するために接近し、索を渡す作業中の様子に注目。この様子は記録映像で残されており、制作の際に大いに役立ちました。
The Barham was the third ship of the Queen Elizabeth class battleships in the Royal Navy. She underwent a modernization and refit after World War I, in which she participated shortly after entering service, to strengthen her defenses. After the outbreak of World War II, she operated in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, participating in the Battle of Dakar (Operation Menace) in September 1940, engaging ships of the Vichy French Navy.
This work depicts the Barham during Operation Menace. Please take note of the scene as she approaches and passes ropes to tow the battleship Resolution, which was disabled by a torpedo attack by a French submarine off Dakar on September 25, 1940. This scene was preserved on archival video and was of great help in drawing this work.
