　「アーク・ロイヤル」は、イギリス海軍の航空母艦で、同時代の他国海軍の中型空母と比較しても、勝るとも劣らない性能を備えた優秀な艦でした。ワシントン海軍軍縮条約と建造ドックの規模の制約を受け、艦体規模を抑えつつ可能な限り長い飛行甲板を装備するため様々な工夫がなされました。その結果、艦の前後（特に艦尾側）に大きくオーバーハングされた飛行甲板を艦と一体化させた姿は、まさにこの艦の最大の特徴となりました。また、艦首には油圧式のカタパルト2基が装備されており、航空機運用の面で大きなアドバンテージでした。第二次世界大戦が始まると、イギリス海軍最新鋭の空母として各方面で展開された作戦に参加しました。就役から2年余りで戦没しているものの、その短い戦歴の中で様々な戦果を上げ活躍しました。
　作品は、1940年9月、「メネス作戦」実行部隊（H部隊）の構成艦として、ダカール沖で作戦行動中の「アーク・ロイヤル」を描いたものです。その特徴的な同艦の艦尾に、任務を終えたソードフィッシュ雷撃機が着艦しつつあるシーンです。描くにあたり、艦尾の極端なオーバーハングや、高い乾舷の側面に無数に設けられた舷窓と、大きな四角い開口部といった同艦の特徴をいかに緻密に表現するかにこだわりました。併せて、私が苦心した鋼鉄を感じられるような質感表現にもご注目下さい。

The Ark Royal was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, a superior ship that outperformed the medium-sized aircraft carriers of other navies of the same era. Due to the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty and the size of the building docks, various efforts were made to keep the size of the ship down while equipping it with the longest flight deck possible. As a result, the flight deck, with its large overhangs at the front and rear (especially on the aft side), was integrated into the ship, and became her most distinctive feature. She was also equipped with two hydraulic catapults on the bow, a major advantage in terms of aircraft operations. When World War II began, she participated in operations deployed in various areas as the Royal Navy's most advanced aircraft carrier. Although she was sunk in action a little more than two years after entering service, she was active in a variety of battles and achieved a variety of results in her short career.
This work depicts the Ark Royal in operational action off Dakar in September 1940 as a component ship of the Operation Menace execution force (Force H). The scene depicts a Swordfish torpedo bomber, which has completed its mission, landing on the stern of the Ark Royal. In drawing this scene, I focused on how to precisely depict the extreme overhangs of the stern, the numerous portholes and large square openings on the high drywall sides, and other features of the ship. Also, please pay attention to the textured steel that I worked so hard on.
