「比叡」と「金剛」は、明治8年度計画によりイギリスに発注され、明治11（1878）年に竣工した装甲コルベットです。装甲フリゲート（後に二等戦艦）「扶桑」と共に編入された両艦は、大日本帝国海軍の近代化に大きく寄与しました。明治23（1890）年9月に発生したオスマントルコ軍艦「エルトゥールル」の座礁沈没事故後に、その生存者を本国まで送り届けた艦としてもよく知られています。

　本作品は、遥か離れたコンスタンティノープルを目指し、長い航海に挑む「比叡」と「金剛」を描いたものです。日本とトルコが固い絆で結ばれるきっかけとなった出来事の一場面をイメージし、制作しました。艦上は「エルトゥールル」の生存者と共に、後に国難に真っ向から立ち向かった海のつわものたちが乗り組み、甲板上で懸命に操艦しています。平成29（2017）年、導きの神である猿田彦をご祭神とする椿大神社に奉納しました。

The Hiei and Kongo were ordered from Great Britain in the Meiji 8 Naval Plan, and the armored corvettes were completed in Meiji 11 (1878). These two ships were purchased along with the armored frigate Fuso (later a second-class battleship), and contributed greatly to the modernization of the Imperial Japanese Navy. In September of Meiji 23 (1890), when the Turkish warship Ertugrul wrecked on the Japanese coast, they became well known as the ships that delivered the survivors back to their country.

In this work, I have drawn the Hiei and Kongo on their long voyage to Turkey, in which they helped cement a firm relationship between Japan and Turkey. Both the survivors of the Ertugrul and the Japanese crew are on the deck, as they contemplate the destiny facing their countries. In Heisei 29 (2017) this work was dedicated to the “Sarutahiko” Spirit at the Tsubaki Ohkami Yashiro Shrine.
