The Abukuma is the sixth in the Nagara class light cruisers. Her name comes from the Abukuma River, which runs through Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures. Abukuma was laid down at the Uraga dock on December 8, 1921, launched on March 16, 1923, and was scheduled for completion a year and a half later. However, construction was temporarily halted due to the Great Kanto Earthquake that struck on September 1 of the same year. The completion of the ship was delayed for more than two years due to the restoration of facilities and budget problems. On October 20, 1930, during a major training exercise, she was involved in a collision with the light cruiser Kitakami and her bow was damaged. Along with repairs, the bow was modified at Kure Arsenal to change its shape, giving her a distinctive appearance with a double-curved bow, the only one of the Nagara class.
In the Japan-U.S. War, she participated in the Hawaii Operation as the flagship of the 1st Torpedo Squadron, and subsequently took part in operations in various areas. From the latter half of 1942, she was engaged in operations in the northern Pacific, and in July 1943, she participated in the famous Kiska evacuation operation (Commander: Rear Admiral Masatomi Kimura) and and achieved the historic feat of returning home with 1,202 officers and soldiers. On October 25, 1944, as part of the 5th Fleet's flying squadron, she followed Nishimura's fleet into the Surigao Strait. However, under heavy attack by the enemy torpedo boat force, it was damaged and left the front with the destroyer Ushio. On the 26th, while moving from Mindanao to Coron, she was bombed by U.S. bombers and hit by three direct hits and four close-range bombs, and met her end off Negros Island in the central Philippines.
The work depicts the “Abukuma” engaged in the Kiska evacuation operation. The image depicts the scene where the Abukuma is heading south in a thick fog, bypassing the east side of Kiska Island from the north. The ship is navigating through a reef zone at a distance just short of land in order to deceive U.S. radar, and the crew on the foredeck is monitoring the sea surface conditions ahead of them as they head toward their destination. In the background, Kiska Fuji peeks out slightly through the thick fog.
On October 26, 2024, the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the Abukuma, a special reproduction of this work was dedicated at Kashima Shrine (Shirakawa City, Fukushima Prefecture). This shrine has divided its deities into the Abukuma's onboard shrine.
